The story takes place in 2053, the main character is the protagonist, Mr. Mead. He loves taking long walks every evening by himself. He has never seen any other person out walking during his long walks. Mr. Mead walks past all the houses and whispers to them, asking questions like "What's up on Channel 4, Channel 7, Channel 9?" While Mr. Mead is walking he gets pulled over by the only police car in city. A year ago, 2052, the election year, the force had been cut down from three police cars to one. As he is stopped the police officer asks him a series of questions and his ansewers don't seem to be very appropriate.
